How to Get Started as an Amateur Boxer
Are you or your child starting the journey in amateur boxing and you don't know where to begin? What gear you need? How do you sign up? When and where do I compete? You came to the right place!
Here at GLB, we've made it our mission to provide everything a young amateur boxer needs to get started in this wonderful journey of boxing.
After finding a gym and/or trainer, here's what to do next:
If you have plans to compete in the future, the first thing you need to do is register with USA Boxing. Your coach may require you to do so when joining their gym or training program. You will not be allowed to compete in any sanctioned events until you have done so. There are also a lot of benefits to registering and being a USA Boxing member. You can find out more & register here >> Welcome to USA Boxing
What gear do you need as an amateur boxer?
Having the right protective gear for competition is top priority. This is taken VERY seriously by USA Boxing. Not only is quality important when competing at a USA Boxing sanctioned event, compliant gear is required. That's where we come in! We have everything you need to be USA Boxing compliant for your next match! Everything is listed and linked below:
The gear above is what the coach and/or fighter must supply themselves. The sanctioning body (USA Boxing) in that region where you're competing will supply the gloves. You can NOT bring or wear your own personal gloves in competition. Your coach will also supply the tape and gauze used to wrap your hands. This must be checked & signed off on by an official at the competition BEFORE you step into the ring.
What is a passbook?
A passbook is required before competing. Most of the time your coach/trainer will take care of this for you. Before getting the passbook you'll need to be registered with USA Boxing and complete a medical physical exam. You can find the form needed to be filled out by your physical here >> Medical Release Form
You can find other medical release forms here in case the fighter has braces, breast implants, etc. >> USA Boxing | Medical Forms
Once you're registered with USA Boxing, have all your compliant gear, filled out any and all medical forms and have trained with a coach and/or trainer.. You're ready to compete!
If you have any further questions or concerns about competition, the gear or anything at all, we'll be happy to help! Good luck!
